The North Quincy Banned Book Club spring meeting is on March 25th at 7 PM at the North
Quincy Library. At the bi-monthly meeting, the group discusses the reasons for each book's challenges or bans, the history of each of the books, and the content of the book itself.
For March, the club will be discussing The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. The story is about a young boy from Kabul by the name of Amir and his experience growing up within the tumultuous events of the fall of Afghanistan's monarchy through the Soviet invasion. The story follows the exodus of refugees to Pakistan and the United States and the rise of the Taliban regime. The Kite Runner book has been targeted by right-wing activist groups in public schools and libraries for being banned/challenged across the country.

Tracking banned books
Marshall Libraries has a project that tracks banned/challenged books across the country to let people know what is happening. The Kite Runner was published in 2003 and was first challenged in 2008. Most of the challenges are centered around the book's depiction of the rape of a child. Parents and student groups have been successful in defending the Kite Runner, preventing the book from being banned or getting the book reinstated after it has been banned. Please join the Quincy Banned Book in March for a discussion of the book The Kite Runner. (click here)

Virtual book club
A lot of people ask me if we can do a virtual band book club. Unfortunately, the logistics of this are too difficult, but the librarian at the North Quincy library has offered to provide the syllabus for anyone that wants to start a banned book club at their local library. This is a great act of defiance of the Trump administration's active campaign to target marginalized communities by banning books in public schools and libraries. Also, getting together with like-minded people to discuss incredibly talented artists and authors makes for a great therapy session and support network while letting marginalized communities know they have allies among their neighbors. If you can't join us in the city of presidents, please consider starting your own club. Message John Bowes if you're interested in the syllabus.
Help grow network
The Marshfield Democratic town committee needs your help growing awareness in our communities. Many communities no longer have local papers, so it is hard for people to find out what's going on and get involved. That is why the Marshfield Democratic Town Committee is asking you to share content in your personal network and neighborhood.
A great way to help is to email an invitation to the event to people you know who might be interested. The committee has created a PDF that can be sent through any email system as an attachment. (click here)
Social media
Sharing the content on social media platforms is always helpful. There are two ways you can do this: either by sharing an image or a post from the committee. Below is a link to the image and the posts. If the content has not been posted yet, there will be a date when the post will appear, so check back at that time.

The real world
Getting the word out the old-fashioned way in the community, a person-to-person contact is easily the most effective way to build awareness. For this reason the committee has created flyers and palm cards that you can distribute. These are available for download in both color and black and white.
